Frequently Asked Questions

How does therapy help?

As human beings we tend to avoid that which is painful or confusing.  Often this makes matters worse.  We may begin to develop symptoms or self-defeating patterns.  We can't sleep, we worry excessively, we eat too much or not enough.  We withdraw from the people and activities we love.  We forget how to feel joy and contentment.

Psychotherapy is a form of treatment in which the relationship between the client and the therapist is used to increase awareness of emotions, patterns and conflicts.  With increased awareness there is an opportunity to access strengths, develop new skills and make healthier choices.  We can heal and grow from past experiences that were painful by learning how to acknowledge and respond to them.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

We will talk about what brings you to therapy and what you would like to address in therapy. We will work together on developing a plan for meeting your goals for therapy. If you are uncertain as to whether you want to pursue therapy you may schedule a consultation appointment to discuss your options.

How long will I be in therapy?

The length of treatment varies depending on many factors such as the severity of your problem or symptoms, how long you have been experiencing the problem or symptoms, expectations and goals of therapy as well as the frequency of sessions.  Your progress and treatment needs will be discussed through the course of therapy.
